After a visit to the archive Gail was motivated to do some research about theĀ  various language versions of Art for art’s sake and here is her nutshell version the English rendering of a French slogan from the 19th century — l’art pour l’art. It expresses a philosophy that the intrinsic value of art, and the only “true” art, is not based on any instructional, moral or useful function. The Latin version of this phrase: ars gratia artis, is used as a slogan by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and appears in the circle around the roaring head of the lion in their logo.
